December 3rd Proposal:
This project will be formed out of Option A) Interface and Language Track, and based on a combination of 1.Theatrification, and 2.Interface as Formal System. My concept is creating a functioning calculator (basic calculations only for project sake) with a cryptic, abstracted, and impractical interface. Though some of the first abaci were analog, the Interface of calculators is very standardized today. A rectangular LCD screen, with standardized number font, and a set of buttons underneath is the most popular and universally accepted interface of calculators. My calculator, apart from being virtual, will not be as traditional. My preliminary concept is a calculator with the display screen at the very center of the object, with the buttons surrounding it, possibly in a disordered pattern. The calculator may even appear visually like a different object or device, such as: a game, a remote, a piece of wood, etc.. The calculator would make unconventional sounds, as calculators are not known for making sounds at all. The numbers would not use the traditional decimal number system, rather a series of symbols or further abstractions of the numbers (these numbers would still represent real numbers that the calculator would be able to decipher and compute.)
